A New Beginning for SC State Track and Field

New South Carolina State Head Coach Jerod Wims is now in the position to bring more success to our new program.  Wims is from Miami, Florida and attended college at Florida International University before transferring to Auburn University.  He was also a sprinter who also played football. He was apart of the NFL Regional Combine in 2014.  Before his tenure at SC State, he was the Head Track and Field/Cross Country coach at Mercer University.  They didn’t have a Men’s Track Team, only a Women’s, so he’ll look to take advantage of having both, men and female athletes.

Q: What convinced you to come to Sc State?

A: The potential and the possibility of being a national ranked team at some point and the success of what you guys had going on the past few years. and what I saw what I was able to bring to the table

Q: What are your first year goals for the team and as a coach

A: Run fast and build on what happened in the last few years and I know we had two who went to the professional level here and I want to break records that they were on relays with and not even replacing them but making our guys better.

Q: Do you Notice any differences between your athletes here compared to Mercer?

A: the only real difference is that at the backside of my career, I recruited them. It’s harder to have guys buy into the program while having a coaching change.

Q: If there’s one thing you dislike about coaching, what would it be?

A: the inability to control everything and one of my downfalls is that I had a hard time delegating roles.

Q: How excited are you for this season?

A: I’m very excited man, I feel like we can definitely make a big run in the MEAC this year. We are coming for A&T at the top and that’s why I’m here, to win.
